About Us
We both got into the building industry to build beautiful spaces, and to make a difference in the built environment. After decades of designing and building (we think) beautiful spaces, we wanted to tackle the second part. To make a difference. To create a better built environment. After many years of wanting to build with straw bale and waiting for the right client or product to come along, we finally decided if we were going to do it, we had to do it ourselves and the Straw Wall Company was born. Straw Bale Structural Insulated Panels are an idea that has been around for more than a decade in many areas and we're bringing that idea to Michigan. We are confident that we have the knowledge and experience to do it right.

 

Steven Varnum
Steven is the head of Residential Design at Bluebird Day Architecture and has been a lead designer for more than twenty years. He began his studies as an Ecologist and went on to study Environmental Design with the hopes of implementing some of the things he had learned as an Ecology student. He has designed everything from conventionally framed kitchen remodels to quonset hut homes, and from heirloom quality vacation homes to mid-mountain restaurants. He brings a keen understanding of building science, design sensibility, and a strong desire for a more sustainable future to the Straw Wall Company.

 

Martin Clarke
Martin is the owner of Giraffe Design Build, Ann Arbor's premier boutique design build company. He has more than three decades of experience managing projects and brings a team of tradesman with skill and
experience unmatched in Central Michigan. Giraffe Design Build is among the very best Michigan has to offer and the Straw Wall Company is proud to have them as our primary build team.
